Change DNS

In order for a website to be working online, it must have a full set of DNS records. However, these records are unique for the server the website is located on. If you decide to move your website from one server to another, you will also have to update your DNS records.

Why do you need DNS records?

The DNS records are responsible for translating domain names into numerical IP addresses, which helps a browser to connect with the real physical address of a website within a certain network. They are crucial for the online availability of the websites and help you remember just the domain name instead of the IP address. If the name servers are set incorrectly, your domain name will not be pointed to your website files and your website will subsequently go offline.

Change the DNS records

Free Moodle installation with free domain name and full DNS controlIf you are about to transfer your website to another hosting provider, i.e. to point it to a different server on the Internet, which requires a change of your domain name's name servers as well, you should know that all the services related to the resolution of your domain name will go offline. This means that your website, email and FTP connection will be disabled until the name server update propagates worldwide. This process usually takes about 24 hours.

In order to avoid any additional downtime, it is strongly recommended that you have a copy of your website on the new hosting web server, so that as soon as the DNS change takes effect, you will have your website online.

You can also change additional DNS records, such as AAAA or TXT records. Some of these records don't have an impact on the website's online availability, but if you are not sure what you are doing, it is always a good idea to consult with the support staff prior to making any changes or modifications.

Changing DNS records with NTC Hosting

Performing a 'change DNS server' action through the NTC Hosting web hosting Control Panel is easy indeed. You will only need to go to the Domain Manager section, mark the domain name that you wish to change the name servers for and hit the Edit DNS button.

Another option for you would be to visit the Custom DNS Records section. There you can also modify the complete set of available DNS records.

Note: every DNS record change will take a minimum of 4 hours to propagate online. Be careful when making changes, since frequent changes are usually updated slower.
