How does the web work?
The World Wide Web represents a network of computers. All the computers on the web are connected by using different types of connections - broadband connections, phone lines, cables, and other types of data transfer mechanisms. Some of the computers on the web do not offer any services but instead connect to other computers to receive some web content or services - these are the web client computers. On the other hand, there are other computers on the Internet
, which are available 24/7, and which offer services to the web client computers - these are the web servers
To browse the Internet the clients use various types of web software. Most often used are the web browsers
which allow the clients to find and open websites
on the servers by typing the site's URL
in the address field or by using the search engines.
What is a website?
The website consists of web pages
, media files
, and other types of content. All these digital assets are addressed with a domain name
or IP address
, and are hosted on a web server
. In most cases all the data on a website is related to topics similar to the website's subject.
Depending on your site's content there are static and dynamic websites. Static websites usually use HTML code and have an invariable content. Dynamic web pages are created in more powerful and complicated scripting languages
and ASP. Their content is variable and can depend on user registration and privileges. It can be automatically and dynamically updated by using content from other web resources and RSS feeds
design refers to the process of creating a website's appearance and to the choice of a right color scheme, page layout, fonts and more.
While every single web page
in a website has different content, all the pages share a similar graphic
design because they are using a common website template
contain all the basic web design
elements - the website's CSS style, buttons, backgrounds
, borders, as well as various graphic elements such as hover images, bullets and header banners. When a website template is applied to a website, all the pages assume its appearance, using the same style, background and other graphical elements.
Website designers are using web design software tools like Photoshop
and GIMP. They provide all the necessary features - different shapes, styles, gradients and masks, simple scripts
, etc. - for creating a web page’s layout and a website's complete appearance. First, the new website’s look is created as a single image by the image editing software. Once the website design
process is finished, the web designer can “slice up” that image into smaller images which can be applied to the HTML code of the web design template.
